Joel Popadics (AWS, ASMA)

Joel Popadics (AWS, ASMA) is one of America's foremost watercolour painters, born in 1961 in Passaic County, New Jersey. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and launched his professional career as an assistant to the celebrated illustrator and watercolourist James McMullan — an experience that profoundly shaped his artistic sensibility and commitment to the medium. He has been a professional artist for over thirty years and is widely regarded as a leading voice in contemporary American watercolour.

In terms of professional leadership, Popadics currently serves as President of the prestigious American Watercolor Society (AWS) in New York City, and is a Past-President of the New Jersey Water Color Society. He has also served on the board of the Ridgewood Art Institute in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where he has taught watercolour and drawing to adults and young people for more than three decades. Beyond his teaching at the Institute, he has lectured at Parsons School of Design and The King's College in New York, and leads annual outdoor painting workshops across the United States and Europe. He has served as Artist-in-Residence at Shelburne Farms in Vermont and continues to teach an annual summer workshop with the Shelburne Craft School.

His watercolours have been exhibited in solo and group shows at institutions including the National Academy of Art and Design in New York, the Place St. Charles Gallery in New Orleans, and the San Francisco Academy of Art, and he is an annual exhibitor at the International Marine Art Exhibition at the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport, Connecticut. Among his many national awards are the Edgar A. Whitney Memorial Award from the Hudson Valley Art Association, the Grumbacher Gold Medal from the California Watercolor Association, and the Silver Medal of Honor (twice) from the New Jersey Watercolor Society. His works are held in the permanent collections of the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, the Hamilton House Museum, and the Ridgewood Art Institute, and his expertise has been featured extensively in American Artist, The Artist's Magazine, Watercolor Artist, and Watercolor Magic.

Stylistically, Popadics is celebrated for his mastery of light and atmospheric effect — in particular his love of fog, mist, and the subtle play of shifting skies. Guided by the principle that "less is more," he achieves a remarkable sense of air and mood through economy of brushstroke, inviting viewers to feel the emotional resonance of the natural world.
