Jung Hun Sung
Jung Hun Sung is one of the most internationally celebrated hyperrealist watercolour masters of his generation. Born in 1971 in Yeosu, a small port city in South Jeolla Province, South Korea, with a rich and vibrant artistic culture, he began painting in a studio at the age of ten. He has since devoted himself exclusively to watercolour, and is now widely regarded as representing the highest standard in contemporary Korean watercolour art. He currently lives in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, where he runs his own watercolour studio.
Stylistically, Jung Hun Sung is celebrated for his hyperrealist figurative portraits, particularly his extraordinary ability to capture the subtlety of human expression — above all, the depth and emotion within the eyes. His works carry a visual impact comparable to oil painting, achieved entirely through the watercolour medium. He is known for his confident, fluid brushwork and masterful use of overlapping techniques, creating compositions that balance strength and delicacy, movement and stillness, precision and spontaneity. The result is a body of work in which figures drawn from everyday life are rendered with a compelling sense of both physical likeness and inner spirit — earning him the admiration of the international watercolour community.
His works have been exhibited worldwide, including by invitation at the Moscow International Watercolor Art Festival in Russia. He has served as juror for multiple prestigious international competitions, including the tARTget Painting Prize 2026 (Portrait and Figure category) and the International Watercolour Masters (IWM) festival in England. He is also a signature artist with Daniel Smith Artists' Materials, one of the world's leading manufacturers of professional watercolour paints, reflecting the international recognition of his artistic excellence.
