Marcus Bicknell
Marcus Bicknell was born in the United States and holds British nationality, currently residing in the Chiltern Hills, England. A graduate of Cambridge University with a Master's degree in Physical Anthropology, he spent several decades at the forefront of the media and entertainment industries — managing the early career of the rock group Genesis, working with CBS Records and A&M Records across Europe, and serving as founding director of SES Astra, the satellite operator that launched Sky, BBC, ITV and hundreds of channels across the continent, as well as working with the BBC.
The great-grand-nephew of the Victorian polymath Clarence Bicknell (1842–1918) — botanist, archaeologist, watercolourist, Esperantist, and philanthropist — Marcus serves as Chairman of the Clarence Bicknell Association, curator of the family collection, and editor of the Association's online platform. For over four decades, he has devoted himself to bringing Clarence's life and work to wider public attention, with a particular focus on his extraordinary botanical watercolours, of which nearly 5,000 survive in museums and institutions across ten European countries. Through academic research, digital publication, and international exhibitions — including the landmark presentation at the 2026 Le Venezie Watercolor Festival in Treviso — Marcus has played a central role in establishing Clarence Bicknell as a figure of enduring significance at the intersection of art, natural history, and cultural heritage. He was awarded the Parmurelu d'Oru prize for services to culture in Bordighera, Italy in 2017, and received the Freedom of the City of Genoa in 2025.
